NXP Supplies Foundation for New Era of Secure, Connected Smart City Services with MIFARE DESFire EV3 IC 2. June 2020

NXP today announced MIFARE® DESFire® EV3, a third-generation IC designed to enhance urban life by adding new levels of security and connectivity to vital Smart City services, including public transport, access control, micro-payments, and loyalty programs.

The features of the MIFARE DESFire EV3 reflect NXP’s continued commitment to secure, connected Smart City services. The United Nations estimates, in their 2018 report on World Urbanization Prospects, that one in every three people will live in cities with at least half a million inhabitants by 2030. With more people living in cities, there is increased need for services that make urban life more convenient and more enjoyable. When secure contactless transactions are built into essential city services, daily activities can become easier to manage and people can have a more seamless experience when they do ride the bus, pay for parking, enter a classroom or office building, make a purchase, use a coupon, or earn loyalty points.

As part of NXP’s proven MIFARE DESFire portfolio, the MIFARE DESFire EV3 brings enhanced performance to the existing product family. For example, the MIFARE DESFire EV3 IC offers a longer read range and faster transaction speeds than its predecessors – that make Smart City services even more convenient and secure.

An extensive list of security features give the MIFARE DESFire EV3 more ways to protect data and help ensure privacy. The IC hardware and software are certified to Common Criteria EAL 5+, and the IC supports a broad choice of open crypto algorithms based on DES, 2K3DES, 3K3DES, or AES. A card generated MAC helps to securely authenticate transactions, so as to help minimize fraud and identity theft, and a new Transaction Timer feature, which can be used to set a maximum time per transaction, helps mitigate man-in-the-middle attacks so it’s harder for an attacker to interfere with the transaction.

Smart City services that run on MIFARE DESFire EV3 can be deployed to NFC-enabled smartphones and wearables using NXP’s MIFARE 2GO cloud service. MIFARE 2GO manages digitized MIFARE product-based credentials and can enable contactless payments or access features using the device – and helps to streamline mobile integration via NXP’s ecosystem. In addition, each MIFARE DESFire EV3 IC is pre-configured with keys to enable delegated application management, which supports over-the-air updates to already deployed smart cards. The preloaded keys support personalization for each IC, without forcing card issuers to manage and deliver a new set of keys.
