Wristbanditz and NXP create jungle fever in Vienna 30. November 2016

Ever wonder how you might do on a reality TV show that challenges you to live in the jungle? If you had been invited at “Let’s C.A.M.P. (Celebrate A Mega Party)” in Vienna this past June, you would have found out.

Once a year, the Austrian sales house of RTL media group, IP Österreich organizes an event with clients, partners and friends to present the new TV program for the upcoming season. This year, however, everything should be different: more innovation, more entertainment, more fun, all inspired by one of their popular RTL TV show formats “Ich bin ein Star – holt mich hier raus!”, sometimes also called “Jungle Camp.”

About 500 guests were “kidnapped” for a night and put through various exams that revealed their survival skills. An empty space covering 7,000 square meters was rented for the evening and decorated from top to bottom with real flowers, tropical trees, a custom tree house, coconut mugs, tiki bars, and more. As guests explored the space and made their way through each challenge, they collected points which were then tabulated, at the end of the event, to crown the King of the Jungle.

Wristbanditz developed an interactive concept in which the participants of the games logged points with each challenge. At check-in guests received a personalized wristband equipped with an NFC chip supplied by NXP.

The wristband supported all event interactions and even scheduled email communication from the event organizer. Event guests competed for best costume and were invited to attempt a variety of skills-based tests, including walking through a waterfall, catching starfish, throwing (imitation) cockroaches, and navigating the Cave of Horror. Adding to the fun was a group of make-up artists available for jungle-style makeovers, and an NFC-connected photo booth that responded to a tap from the NFC-enabled wristband.

The fashionable wristbands, appropriately themed in bright green and black, were made of quick-drying fabric and equipped with a small, coated NXP NTAG® 213 tag, which can withstand exposure to humidity and water. To scan the wristbands, Wristbanditz used tablet PCs with integrated NFC readers, placed in purpose-built cases.

Guests who used the photo booth received an instant printout of their photo as well as an email with the picture attached, so they could share it on social media and have it as a digital souvenir. Photos were automatically tagged, based on the wristband’s unique ID, and posted to an image gallery. Guests were able to search the image gallery by name, without having to scroll through hundreds of pictures to find themselves or their friends.

The same Wristbanditz / NXP event cloud system that managed guest check-ins, tracked challenge points, and posted tagged photos was also used before the event itself, to manage digital invitations. That way, guests had a personalized experience from day one, and the event sponsors had a single system for ensuring smooth execution of every event detail.
