Mifare Support for APDU

Is this true that Mifare cards do not understand APDU?

I used APDU commands to talk to Mifare Classic via some reader and it worked.
So it seems different readers translate different APDU to Mifare commands?
    Or how does this work?

    Hi stephan27,

The APDU format is a communication layer and has nothing to do with the tag you want to communicate. The APDU format is defined from the driver of your NFC reader. The MIFARE products define several command sets, depending on the compatibility level your driver supports. For example you can communicate to the MIFARE DESFire either via ISO 7816 compatibility commands or via native commands. The exact structure of the APDU commands is explained in the manual of your driver. It is possible that some commands have to be enclosed in so called enveloping APDU commands.

    Kind regards,
    The MIFARE Team

It is actually the card itself that manages the translation of APDUs from and to its native command set.
