MIFARE DESFire (MF3ICD40) 10. June 2011

Discontinuation of MF3ICD40 – Replaced by MIFARE DESFire™ EV1

Letter dated on June 30, 2010 to our key customers and partners

Dear MF3ICD40 user,

NXP Semiconductors wishes to inform you about an update within the company’s MIFARE DESFire microcontroller product range and the planned discontinuation of the MF3ICD40. The MIFARE DESFire product range from now on consists of the MF3ICD21, MF3ICD41 and MF3ICD81.

Originally launched in 2002, the MF3ICD40 reflected the standards and market requirements at the time. Following a number of technology innovations at NXP and our desire to create a product line which includes a number of industry leading security features, the MF3ICD40 will now be discontinued and replaced by three existing products within the MIFARE DESFire portfolio – MF3ICD21, MF3ICD41 and MF3ICD81.

Commercially known as

MIFARE DESFire EV1

products, NXP launched these products in Q4 2008 and they were the next step in the evolution of the MF3ICD40. With three memory sizes, each product offers unprecedented flexibility to meet different contactless application needs.

These three products provide a seamless upgrade path, offering customers increased levels of security, including a choice of open DES / 3DES / 3K3DES / AES crypto algorithms with hardware co-processors.

The MIFARE DESFire EV1 contactless microcontroller ICs are Common Criteria EAL 4+ certified (Hardware + Software) and backwards compatible with existing MF3ICD40 infrastructures, enabling a future-proof migration path.

In order to take the next step with respect to the latest requirements of contactless applications such as public transport, access management and payment, NXP has begun phasing out the MF3ICD40. However, orders for the MF3ICD40 will continue to be taken until December 31st, 2011 and the last date of delivery will be on June 30th, 2012.

As a result, NXP recommends that new MIFARE DESFire deployments should be based on the MF3ICD21, MF3ICD41 or MF3ICD81 products.

With regards to NXP’s standard terms and conditions, we provide support to existing infrastructures for their migration, with a technical migration document package and personalized attention.
