Why You Should Be Checking Out Sega Forever As a fan of mobile and retro games, I was stunned to just be learning about Sega Forever. If you, like me, were unaware about this service, let me explain. Sega Forever is this video game company's entry into the free-to-play or "freemium" game market. What does this mean? Basically, you can download this game and play (at this time) over 30 mobile titles for free. The only thing is, unless you pay a certain price, you'll be watching ads as you play these games. For most people on a budget, these ads aren't too intrusive. But, it's understandable if you want to pay the price to remove them. And, to be honest, Sega Forever certainly has a lot to offer. There are over 30 games and it's quite a list of classics. And, no, we're not just talking about Sega Genesis games. Although, there are some great ones here including Streets of Rage 2, Phantasy Star, and Vectorman. You'll also find Crazy Taxi (the Dreamcast port) that's completely playable on your mobile device. I'm a huge fan of mobile racing games. Lately, I've been reading lots of tips for Offroad Outlaws tips for Offroad Outlaws and Asphalt 9: Legends, to name a few. If you're a sports fan, there's also a full version of Virtua Tennis 2 available. Personally, I love this idea. I wish these games weren't only available on mobile devices. I would love to see a more expanded library (let's say at least 100 games) from Sega available for a monthly price. I think, right now as much as I love this console, the Sega Genesis has been re-released enough recently. In addition to lots of Genesis games, I'd love to see more Dreamcast, Master System, and mobile exclusive releases available for laptop/desktop CPU users as well as those on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PS4. Understandably, I know there are many reasons why this type of partnership will likely never happen. Something else I wanted to talk about were bonus features. Being that this is an "always-connected" service, there are perks that certainly old-school Sega Genesis players might find cool. Something that fans of emulation will love seeing is the availability of save states. If you were unaware, save states are like being able to use memory cards. You can save your progress while play Sega Genesis games. In the 80s and 90s, this was only something that certain RPG games were able to utilize. And, even then, where you could save would sometimes be few and far between. Another feature that I really love is the ability of Sega Forever to integrate Bluetooth controllers. This means that, instead of relying on sometimes problematic mobile controls, you can get that realistic feel of using actual buttons. You don't only have to track down and order Bluetooth compatible Sega Genesis controllers. As far as I've seen during my research, it looks like any type of Bluetooth game controller should work properly. Something the more competitive players will love seeing is that you can utilize leaderboards with these games. This is an awesome feature that I loved. For instance, I'm no pro gamer by any means but I'm pretty good at Streets of Rage. Considering that, it was nice to see that my game username was ranked as high as it was. I'm not bragging, believe me, it was only in like the top 30%. I just thought it was so cool to see since I'm not on the leaderboards for any other game. With that said, this on-demand type service isn't without its issues. After reading about reviews of this service on the internet, something I came across was that there are sometimes frame rate issues with these games. However, at the price of free, it's hard to complain too much about framerate issues. That being said, with better emulation, I could see this collection being worth a higher monthly cost. Overall, Sega Forever is an awesome freemium service that I recommend checking out. Yes, there are ads and some framerate issues. But having access to a fast-growing library of Sega titles for free is impossible to beat. Currently, there are over 30 games available and it looks like this list is only going to continue growing.
