The key version is for your private bookkeeping. For instance, if you issue your product at the first time, you will use keys and the key version = 0. If the customer needs a new card, or your system has been attacked, you can issue cards with a new key. In this case you would set the key version = 1. This use case must be detected by your reader station and therefore you use key versions.

You can use the DESFire EV1 native command GetKeyVersion(keyNumber) to retrieve the key version of a selected key number used on the card. This command can be used before (!) an authentication is used, to select the proper key for the authentication.
