German campuses launch self-service campus card kiosks using MIFARE DESFire EV1 for contactless student ID cards 6. February 2017

Six universities in Berlin, Germany, have participated in a joint project that automates the issuance of student cards by using self-service kiosks, thus facilitating and accelerating the process of issuing student IDs. Students can now print their own campus cards in less than a minute and cards can be issued outside the usual working hours of the campus card office.

The ID issuance system was deployed in autumn last year, when outdated paper-based credentials have been replaced with multifunctional contactless smart cards. The student card itself supports multiple applications, and serves as the students’ primary form of identification on campus, as a loan card for the university library, an electronic wallet for the cafeteria, as well as a bus and train ticket.

Each ID card is powered by a contactless MIFARE® DESFire® EV1 contactless chip.
